The Week in Smirk — 08.19.12

| July 19, 2012

The anti-Putin rock group Pussy Riot was sentenced to two years  in prison this week by a Russian court for the crime of “hooliganism.” The verdict has sparked worldwide protests over censorship from an increasingly unstable Kremlin.  President Bill Clinton, celebrating his birthday today, responded to the protests: “Listen, I’m all for free pussy riots. I had ’em in the Oval Office all the time, and they were awesome.”  Julian Assange, who’s been offered diplomatic sanctuary at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, made a defiant appearance today from the building’s balcony. Federal immigration agencies in the United States, offering deportation deferrals, were overwhelmed by the surge of immigrants lining up for applications to work legally. ♣  Presumed G.O.P. vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan expressed his love for the rock band Rage Against the Machine this week, which sent the group into a rage against Paul Ryan.
